BRINGING YOUR PET IN FOR A SURGERY OR PROCEDURE
Fasting
For all procedures that are done under general anesthesia, we will request that your pet be fasted prior to the day of surgery.
Kindly withhold food after 11.30pm the day before the procedure, and water from 7am on the day of the procedure.
Fasting and admission time reminders will be sent to the main contact registered with us. If your pet is on any long term medications, kindly call in advance to check with your attending vet on fasting requirements.
For pocket pets like RABBITS: Please DO NOT fast them. Bring along their usual hay and pellets to the clinic, our nurses will assist in feeding during pre and post op to keep your rabbit’s guts moving.
Bathing
Your pet will not be able to have a bath for at least 12-14 days after sterile surgery, therefore if your pet requires bathing we recommend that it be done prior to the day of surgery.
Preanesthetic blood work
Although we use the best and safest techniques, drugs and equipment possible, any type of surgery (whether for animals or humans) poses some risks. These risks are often related to underlying medical conditions that may not be apparent externally.
To decrease these potential risks, we highly recommend pre-anaesthetic blood testing, particularly for pets eight years of age and more.
The panel of laboratory tests checks the function of your pet’s major organs, such as the ability of the liver and kidney to rid the body of drugs and medications. We are also able to identify abnormalities in blood cells which may affect the blood's ability to carry oxygen, fight infection and prevent excessive bleeding during surgery.
Microchipping and other services
If your pet is not microchipped, now is a great time to consider microchipping particularly if your pet’s visit is for routine desexing/dental scaling & polishing
You may also consider other services like nail clipping, and ear cleaning during this time.
Arriving at the clinic
You will be expected to come to the clinic around 9-10am for the scheduled admission slot with the attending vet.
The attending vet will brief you through the process of the surgery, and provide an estimated cost. Do take note that the estimate is not the final bill.
Before you leave, there will be paperwork to be checked and signed, as well as a deposit to be made.
When do I come back to the clinic to pick my pet up?
Once your pet is awake, our vet will inform you of the pickup time and brief you on post op care upon discharge.
You may expect to bring your pet home in the late afternoon (4-5pm) or evening time (6-8pm), this depends on your pet’s recovery from the procedure and we will confirm the discharge time with you via WhatsApp or a phone call.
BRINGING YOUR PET IN FOR AN ULTRASOUND (DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING)
Ultrasound information:
Pets undergoing an ultrasound will be required to have an empty stomach on admission
Pets will have to be positioned on their sides and back and if they are not still enough for the scan, the vets may need to consider a light sedative dose (this will be discussed with you before getting done if required)
Please fast them for 12 hours before the procedure (unless otherwise stated by your attending vet)
Water is allowed up to 2 hours before the procedure
For pets undergoing the echocardiogram scan for the heart, you may feed a small meal together with the heart medications (if any) for the morning dose.
For pets having an urinary system ultrasound (kidneys/bladder), please refrain from letting your pet urinate for 2 hours prior to the ultrasound.
On the day of the scan:
You will be expected to drop off your pet for admission at the appointment slot you have
Our veterinary receptionists will assist you with a consent form for the procedure and bring your pet in to wait for the scan to be performed.
Please do take note that the region being scanned will be shaved as a requirement.
Pet owners are not allowed in the treatment area and will have to either wait in the waiting room or head off and come back to the clinic when the scan is completed.
If we have only a few scans scheduled for the day, we should be able to give you an estimated time for the discharge.
If there are a lot of scans scheduled, we will get the scans performed according to our ultrasonographer's plan and we will drop you a call/message to inform you of the pick up time.
Results of the scan:
The scan results are not immediately available following the scan
The scan results will usually be submitted to us in 2-5 days following the scan date.
Your primary vet will be informed of the scan results and will contact you directly once the results are ready.
The exception to this is for urgent cases, when a consultation is made after the scan, for preliminary results to be discussed with you
